Visible Mending with Catherine Karp
Saturday, January 3110:00 AM—1:00 PMProgram roomBolton Public Library738 Main St, Bolton, MA, 01740
Join Catherine Karp and learn the art of visible mending of textiles! Do you have a hole in your jeans or frayed cuffs on your comfy old shirt? Did you buy or inherit a textile that needs repair? Catherine Karp will teach techniques to add personal touches that prolong the life of your clothing and other textiles. Learn how you can use embroidery, patching, and darning techniques to turn your damaged clothes and textiles into unique works of art in this hands-on workshop.
Participants will learn about materials and methods for mending that will repair and give a creative and unique look to damaged or well-loved items. Patching with running or cleanly whip stitched edges will be demonstrated. Reinforcing from above and below will also be taught. Many options for thread, stitching, and decorative finishing will be covered, as time allows.
Please bring a few items with you, as you may decide what to work on during the workshop. All materials will be supplied but you are welcome to bring your own scissors, needles, threads, and fabric scraps with you. Participants can also bring their own textiles and mend them on the spot! (This workshop will last 3 hours. Bring snacks or a small bag lunch if you like.)
Free of charge. Class size is limited so that all participants can get personal attention. This workshop is best for teens through seniors.
Please note these policies for our creative classes:
- For the first 48 hours, registration is open to Bolton residents only. After that, registration is open to everyone regardless of residence. If you are a nonresident, please go ahead and sign up; your registration will be reviewed after 48 hours and you'll be added to the class provided there are seats left. Nonresident registrations will be taken in the order received.
- For classes with paid, expert instructors, anyone who signs up then neither shows up nor notifies the library of cancellation at least 48 hours in advance will be blocked from signing up for future classes for a period of no less than 6 months. We've had to take this step in order to curtail the amount of "ghosting" that has occurred with our classes, and to make spaces available to those who are waitlisted. Please do *not* send someone in your place; there are likely people on our waitlist who would like to attend if you cannot.
Registration will be subject to the approval of the library. To register, please provide the following information:
